The umbilical cord

Mothers are often apprehensive about taking care of the umbilical cord.

The umbilical cord

Yet it is both painless and important: it is essential in preventing any risk of infection and requires a simple and regular routine. It will enable the cord to dry up and fall off of its own accord 5 to 15 days after birth. This treatment needs to be carried out three times a day, or even at each diaper-change.

  • Wash your hands.
  • Lie baby down on his back on the changing table.
  • Clean the cord with a compress soaked in a local antiseptic (Chlorhexidine).
  • Do not be afraid to move the cord to clean every part of it properly: it will not hurt as there are no nerves linking the cord and the body.
  • Cover the cord with a dry compress, put on the diaper and fold the top of it back inside so as to allow the cord to breathe.

The best time to clean the cord is after baby's bath. Effectively, when the cord is softened, it is easier to get rid of any secretions that are concealed and difficult to remove when the cord is dry.
Do not forget to wash your hands before and afterwards each time!!!
