Diaper-changing

An essential part of the daily routine.

Diaper-changing

Baby's very fragile skin goes through quite an ordeal during the first few months of life. Baby produces stools up to 3 times a day and urinates more than 20 times a day, not forgetting the problem of nappies which, on prolonged contact with the skin, encourage maceration, irritation and the appearance of diaper rash.

The good reflexes to adopt to ensure baby's bottom remains soft:

  • Baby's notion of cleanliness is very different from that of his mother: he does not cry when he is dirty but when it stings. In other words, some babies never cry when they need changing...
  • The number of changes corresponds to the number of meals. During the first few weeks, baby will need changing at least 8 times per 24 hours and then it can be more spaced out according to baby's habits.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before and after every diaper change.
  • Generally, change baby before or after each feed, then more frequently if he cries because he is wet.
  • Do not forget to adapt the size of the diaper to your baby: neither too small, nor too tight and attached relatively loosely to allow the air to circulate.
  • Always clean your baby's bottom very thoroughly moving from front to back to avoid carrying germs to the genital organs.
  • Use a preventive product to protect the skin from dampness and the effects of harsh chemicals.
  • Rinse and, even more importantly, thoroughly pat baby's bottom dry. If baby is in pain, let his skin dry in the open air or use a hair drier (on the cold setting!).

Baby's diaper area skin is a real barometer of his well-being: a red bottom may be a sign of an unsuitable hygiene routine (frequency of diaper-changing is insufficient, unsuitable cleansing products) or a sign of minor intestinal problems, teething or a forewarning of his first illnesses.

Biolane gives you a choice for cleaning baby's bottom: according to your personal preference, at every diaper-change use Gentle Cleansing Milk rinse free or Pure H2O cleanser or  Thick H2O Baby Wipes.

If baby's bottom is irritated:

  • Expose it to the open air as soon as you are able to,
  • And/or spread a generous layer of Biolane Diaper Rash Cream Dermo-paediatrics to heal and soothe irritated skin. Repeat this routine for several days, even when the redness has disappeared so as to strengthen the hydrolipidic film and protect skin from harmful external factors.
